Why choose this course?
The BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport and Exercise Science is an ideal choice for students who are passionate about sport, fitness, and the science behind performance. It offers a practical and academic route that combines hands-on experience with scientific theory — preparing learners for higher education or employment in the sports industry.
You’ll develop advanced knowledge of anatomy, physiology, psychology, and biomechanics, while gaining real-world skills through applied research and practical assessments rather than just exams.
Course Content/Main Topics
The course is equivalent to either one or three A Levels and is studied full-time over two years. Typical units include:
Functional Anatomy – understanding how the body moves and performs.
Sport and Exercise Physiology – exploring how the body responds to training and exercise.
Applied Sport and Exercise Psychology – examining motivation, confidence, and performance factors.
Biomechanics in Sport and Exercise Science – analysing movement and technique.
Nutrition for Sport and Exercise Performance – understanding dietary needs for athletes.
Research Methods – developing skills for scientific investigation and data analysis.
Field and Laboratory Fitness Testing – using professional techniques to measure performance.
Sports Injury and Rehabilitation – learning how to prevent and manage injuries.
Optional units may include topics such as Technology in Sport, Coaching for Performance, or Sports Massage.
Careers and Higher Education
Upon completion, learners can progress to university degrees such as:

Entry Requirements
4–5 GCSEs at grades 4/C or above, ideally including English, Maths, and Science.
A strong interest in sport and physical activity.
GCSE PE, BTEC Sport or Cambridge National Sport is not required, but does provide a useful foundation upon which further knowledge and understanding can be gained.
