Further Mathematics is designed for students who have a real passion for the subject and want to extend their skills beyond the standard A-Level course. It explores advanced areas of Pure Mathematics, Mechanics, Statistics and Discrete Mathematics, providing a deeper and broader understanding of mathematical concepts.
Studying Further Maths demonstrates exceptional ability in logical thinking, abstract reasoning and problem-solving. It is particularly recommended for students considering mathematics, physics, engineering, computer science or economics at university.
If you enjoy being challenged, thrive on problem-solving and want to explore the subject in greater depth, then A-Level Further Mathematics is the course for you.
Course Content/Main Topics
The Edexcel Further Mathematics course offers flexibility, allowing students to explore a combination of the following areas:
- Further Pure Mathematics: Complex Numbers, Matrices, Further Calculus, Differential Equations, Proof, Hyperbolic Functions, Polar Coordinates.
- Further Mechanics: Work, Energy and Power, Momentum and Collisions, Centres of Mass, Further Kinematics and Dynamics.
- Further Statistics: Probability Distributions, Hypothesis Testing, Chi-Squared Tests, Regression and Correlation.
- Discrete Mathematics (Decision Maths): Graph Theory, Networks, Linear Programming, Algorithms, Game Theory.
Assessment is through four exam papers at the end of Year 13, chosen from a combination of Pure and Applied modules.
Careers and Higher Education
