Course Details
Why choose this course?
It is a comprehensive course, which covers a wide range of literary genres from varying time periods; a course, which enables students to develop their understanding and appreciation of English literature.
Course Content/Main Topics
Component 1: Shakespeare and other drama. We study Shakespeare’s Othello.
Component 2: Two prose texts from a chosen theme. At least one of the prose texts must be pre-1900. We study Revolutionary Road by Richard Yates and A Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams. This also includes poetry from Skirrid Hill by Owen Sheers.
Component 3: A comparison of texts with a theme of your choice. Turn of the Screw by Henry James is covered alongside a novel of your choice. This is your non-exam assessment.

Higher Education: English/English Literature degrees, Media, Film studies, Journalism, teacher training, legal courses and many more academic based courses.
Career opportunities: English Literature is a sound basis for many jobs and is a good grounding for a range of careers.

Entry Requirements
A Grade 6 in both English Language and English Literature is required in order to take this A level, although higher grades are desired.
Students will be set wider reading texts to be completed ahead of their lessons so a willingness to reading is a must.
This is also an essay based subject so students must be prepared to write at length.
